Google's Bold Bet: Small Nuclear Reactors to Power AI's Future

In a move that underscores the tech industry's growing commitment to sustainable energy, Google has announced plans to back the construction of seven small nuclear reactors across the United States. This initiative aims to meet the escalating energy demands of artificial intelligence (AI) operations while contributing to a resurgence in U.S. nuclear power.

Google has entered into an agreement with nuclear-energy startup Kairos Power to purchase electricity generated by these reactors. Collectively, they are expected to provide 500 megawatts of nuclear power by the end of the decade. This endeavor represents the first commercial construction of small modular reactors in the U.S., potentially enabling quicker and more cost-effective reactor build-outs.

Unlike traditional reactors that use water as a coolant, these advanced reactors employ molten fluoride salt, enhancing safety and efficiency. The reactors are anticipated to start delivering power between 2030 and 2035, aligning with Google's commitment to achieving 24/7 carbon-free energy.
